While we would all like to go on holiday and spend whatever we like, the reality is that most of us will have to budget. Keeping that in mind, read on to discover some of my top tips for saving money while on vacation!

  • Use a pre-paid card

Not only does a pre-paid card represent one of the safest ways to carry your money, but also you will be able to manage your cash better as well, as you actually have to load cash onto the card before you spend it. When using a debit or credit card, it is easy for spending to spiral out of control, and you will get charged high rates on international purchases when you use a debit or credit card.

  • Purchase tours and event tickets beforehand

You will often save a substantial sum of money by booking tickets for events online beforehand. Whether you want to book a tour or a club night, check out the prices on the Internet before you go. You should also do this when looking for cheap car rentals if you are going to be hiring a vehicle while on holiday. Online prices are usually better than in-store.

  • International SIM cards / calling cards

Whatever you do, do not make calls from your mobile phone while abroad, as it will cost you a fortune, and make sure you turn your data roaming off as well. When calling home you have two options available to you, either use an international SIM card or calling card. If you have free Wi-Fi at your hotel, why not make a call from a free app, such as Skype or WhatsApp.

  • Do you research about cheap eats

There are plenty of resources, such as TripAvisor’s TheFork and Lonely Planet guides, which will provide you with tips regarding where to eat for cheap. By doing a bit of research beforehand, you will be able to save yourself a considerable sum of money while you are on holiday.

  • Look for free activities

You don’t have to spend money every day of your trip. If you have had an expensive day one day, then make sure you don’t spend anything the day after. Of course, you can laze around the area or go to the beach, but there are other fun ways to save money too. Why not go for a hike and take in the beautiful scenery? Look online for free activities before you leave as well.

These are just a few ways that you can save money while going on holiday. If you follow the advice provided above, you can have an amazing trip without breaking the bank!
